AI can support us, but genuine human connection remains in our hands.
I recently read an article in Reader’s Digest about artificial intelligence. The article discussed concerns that AI may eventually take many of our jobs or even take over parts of our lives. It caught my attention because almost every day, we hear more news about AI becoming increasingly powerful.
Some people find this frightening. I understand their concerns, but I do not have a problem with AI. AI is a valuable tool that can help us in many ways. Its value – and its impact – depend largely on how we choose to use it.
Rather than focusing only on negative thoughts about the future, the Reader’s Digest article made me think about the human qualities we must continue to develop. I summarized them with an easy-to-remember acronym: CARE.
C – Creativity
AI can provide ideas, suggest designs, and help us explore different possibilities. But an idea is only the beginning.
For example, AI can suggest ways to decorate your home with plants. However, it cannot personally walk through your rooms, understand how you want your home to feel, and arrange the plants beautifully throughout the house. Human creativity combines imagination with personal taste, emotion, experience, and action.
A – Attention
AI can create schedules, organize information, and remind us about deadlines. However, it cannot replace the personal attention and discipline required to complete an important project within a specific timeframe. We must decide what is important, remain focused, overcome distractions, and see the work through to completion. AI can support our efforts, but we are still responsible for taking action.
R – Resourcefulness
Imagine that you are driving to an unfamiliar destination with complicated directions. Halfway through the journey, your phone battery dies.
Technology can no longer guide you. You must observe your surroundings, remember what you have already seen, ask someone for directions, or find another way forward.
Resourcefulness is our ability to adapt when the original plan no longer works. It helps us solve unexpected problems instead of becoming discouraged and giving up.
E – Empathy
AI can help us write a thoughtful message or select a card for someone who is going through a difficult time. Those gestures can be helpful, but genuine human empathy goes much deeper.
Sometimes a person does not need more words. They need someone to sit beside them, listen without judgment, hold their hand, or give them a reassuring hug. A caring human presence can communicate more than words alone.
Moving Forward with CARE
AI will continue to change our jobs and our daily lives. We should not fear it or reject it. We should learn how to use it responsibly so that it can help us become more informed, productive, and creative.
The future does not have to be humans against AI. The better future is one in which people use AI as a helpful tool while continuing to strengthen the qualities that make us human. AI can help us, but how we use it is up to us. As AI becomes more powerful and more common in our lives, let us always remember to CARE – through creativity, attention, resourcefulness, and empathy.
What do you think?
How has AI helped you in your work or personal life? Are there other human qualities you believe we must protect and strengthen as AI becomes more powerful? I would like to hear your thoughts and experiences.
